Following a recent update from Turnitin, this option is no longer available. As a result, faculty can no longer submit student work directly to Turnitin.com for originality checking.
This change has a particular impact on discussion posts. Since Turnitin's Brightspace integration does not natively support discussion submissions, some faculty previously used Turnitin.com to manually submit discussion content for review. That workflow is no longer available.
According to Turnitin, this change was implemented to improve data accuracy and security by preventing synchronization issues between Brightspace and Turnitin.
At this time, Turnitin has not provided an alternative method for submitting discussion posts or other student work directly through Turnitin.com.
We understand this may affect your current practices and apologize for the inconvenience. We will continue working with our partners at D2L and Turnitin to explore potential alternative solutions and will share updates as they become available.
Overview
This document is intended for SNHU Global Campus (GC) instructors who have student work to review for potential plagiarism when there is not a corresponding Turnitin assignment in Brightspace, such as with discussion posts. The directions below will walk you through submitting SNHU student work directly to Turnitin and generating an Originality Report.
If an assignment has the "binocular" icon next to it as shown below, it is a Turnitin assignment and the originality report will be generated automatically. The following steps are not applicable to Turnitin assignments.
1. Logging in to Turnitin
For this process, you must use the Turnitin account associated with your SNHU email. Go to the Turnitin website login page. If you have previously signed in to Turnitin with your SNHU email, enter your credentials and select "Log in". Otherwise, select the "Forgotten your password" link (this does not affect your SNHU single sign-on and can be a different password).
Enter your SNHU email address, then select "Next". You will be sent an email containing a password reset link.
Open the link in the email. You will be asked to enter a new password and confirm it. Select the "Next" button to continue.
You should now be able to log in to your Turnitin account. Select "Log in" and enter your SNHU email address and new password to proceed.
2. Adding an Assignment in Turnitin
After logging in, a list of your classes containing Turnitin assignments will be shown. Make sure the heading is "D2L_Brightspace_Production". Select the name of the class with the work you want to submit.
If you do not see your class, you need to return to your course in Brightspace and open a student submission that has a Turnitin Originality Report. Then, refresh this page.
On the class homepage, select the "+Add Assignment" button.
Enter a title for this assignment—this will only be visible to you. Change the "Submit papers to" option to "Do not store the submitted papers". The other fields should be left blank/unchanged. Then select the "Submit" button.
3. Submitting Student Work
Navigate back to the class homepage. Next to your new assignment, open the "More actions" drop down, and select "Submit" from the menu.
Under the "Submit:" drop down, you can choose one of the following upload types:
- Single File Upload - for a single paper
- Multiple File Upload - for many papers
- Cut & Paste Upload - for discussion posts/raw text
- Zip File Upload - for .zip archives containing student work
Choose the upload type that works best for your situation.
In the "Author" field, select the student whose work you are submitting.
If your student is not showing in the drop-down, it means that they have not submitted any Turnitin assignments in Brightspace yet. Because Turnitin data is synced with Brightspace when a student submits their first assignment, you cannot use this until they submit at least one item.
There are different options for uploading student work depending on what upload type you chose. For Single File Upload, you may upload from your computer, from Google Drive, or from Dropbox. When you have chosen your file(s), select the "Upload" button.
You will be taken to a confirmation page. Select the "Confirm" button to finalize and submit.
4. Viewing the Originality Report
Return back to the class homepage. Select "View" next to the assignment. This will take you to the assignment inbox, where every submission and originality report will be visible.
The Originality Report may take more time to generate depending on the size of the submission. If you can't find it, please allow up to 24 hours for the report to process. Most submissions should only take a few minutes.
