How to Submit Student Work Directly to Turnitin (not through Brightspace) (Updated 10/27/2023)

This document is intended for SNHU Global Campus (GC) instructors who have student work to review for potential plagiarism when there is not a corresponding Turnitin assignment in Brightspace.  The directions below will walk you through the setup of a Turnitin assignment where you can submit SNHU student work to obtain a Turnitin Originality Report.

This document has been updated to reflect changes implemented by Turnitin in October 2023 which disabled submission as a "non-enrolled student" and requires that submissions be tied to a student in the course roster.

Use Cases

The process outlined in this document is only for student submissions in Brightspace that do not already have Turnitin enabled such as discussion posts and test essay questions.

If an assignment has the “binocular”icon next to it as shown below, it is a Turnitin assignment and the originality report will be generated automatically and the process below should not be used.

The assignment in question

A. Logging in to Turnitin

Submitting student work outside of a Brightspace Turnitin assignment no longer requires the creation of a new Turnitin account.  You will use your primary Turnitin account which was auto-created via the connection between Brightspace and Turnitin. If you were using a secondary account, please stop using it and follow the directions below.  

Follow the steps below to log in to Turnitin.

Note: Turnitin uses the term class where we use the term course.  These are interchangeable with respect to this document.

1 Go to www.turnitin.com and click the login button in the upper-right corner of the screen. 
2 To continue, you need to reset your password for the Turnitin website.  Note: The Turnitin site does not use your regular SNHU credentials and is not single sign-on.  Changing your password here will not change your password on any other systems.

On the "Login to Turnitin" page, click on "Forgotten your password, click here"
3 Next, on the Reset user Password screen, enter your SNHU email address and last name into the two fields and click the Next button.
4 The next reset screen will ask you to enter your secret question answer.  It is highly unlikely that you will have one since your Turnitin account was created automatically via Brightspace.

Skip over the secret question field and click the "Forgot Your Answer" link.  This will send a password reset email.  Follow the directions in the email to set a password.  The password reset link is only good for twenty-four hours. 
5 Once your password is reset, go back to www.turnitin.com and login with your SNHU email address and new password.  You can then continue to the next step.

B. Adding an Assignment in Turnitin

Now that you have logged into Turnitin, you will see a list of classes you've taught that include Turnitin assignments as in the example image below.  If you've been teaching for a long time, there may be several classes shown.  Scroll to the bottom for most recent classes and locate your class(es) for the current term.  NOTE:  You must be working under the heading D2L_Brightspace_Production.

In order to submit student work, you need to create an assignment within your class(es) in Turnitin.  This is the "container" into which you can submit student work for review and associate it with the appropriate student. You will need to create an assignment in each course section.  Follow the steps below to create an assignment.

1 Locate the class to which you need to add an assignment and click the class name in the Class Name column.  IMPORTANT:  If you do not see your class, you need to return to Brightspace, click into a student submission that has a Turnitin Originality Report, then come back to this page.  This means that you cannot set this up in advance.  Clicking a student submission in Brightspace makes the course visible in the Turnitin website.
2 Next, click the green "+Add Assignment" button as shown below and the continue to the next step.
3 IMPORTANT:  DO NOT USE OR EDIT ANY EXISTING ASSIGNMENTS SHOWN.  ALL OTHER GRADING MUST BE DONE IN BRIGHTSPACE

4 On the "Select your assignment type" screen, select Paper Assignment, then click the "Next Step" button.  DO NOT select PeerMark Assignment!

4 Next, you will see the New Assignment screen.  Complete the fields as follows, then click the "Submit" button:
  1. Assignment Title - enter a title of your choice.  You will be the only person who will see this.  
  2. Point value - leave blank - You are creating this assignment for originality reports only!  Grading will still be completed in Brightspace
  3. Allow only file types... radio button - leave checked
  4. Submit papers to:  Leave as "no repository"
  5. Start Date/Due Date/Post Date - leave as is
  6. +Optional settings - do not change

Continue to the next section, Submitting Student Work.

D. Submitting Student Work

Now that you have an assignment set up in Turnitin, you can submit student work for review and Originality Report generation. Please note that any work submitted is not connected to Brightspace in any way. Follow the steps below to submit student work for review.

Step Action
1 Enter the class and assignment that you just created.
2 Click the More Actions link on the right and click Submit on the drop-down menu.
3 The Submit window will open.  This is where you will submit student work.  You are able to submit student work via these methods:

  • Single File Upload - if you have a single paper to review
  • Cut & Paste Upload - good for discussion posts
  • Multiple File Upload - for many papers
  • Zip File Upload
4 Choose the submission method that works for you and select the student from the Author drop-down.  

Important: If your student is not showing in the drop-down, it means that they have not submitted any Turnitin assignments in Brightspace yet. Because Turnitin data is sync'd with Brightspace when a student submits their first assignment, you cannot use this until they submit at least one item.

When done, click the blue Upload button at the bottom of the screen.
5 The file or text will be uploaded.  Next, you will see a confirmation screen.  If everything looks good, click the Confirm button at the bottom of the screen.
6 Next, click the Go to Assignment Inbox button to view submissions and originality reports.  Please note that the amount of time required to create originality reports varies depending on the size of the submission and submission volume.  It can take from a few minutes to 24 hours to generate a report.
