New Quiz Question Annotation Tools

Updated on

Brightspace Quizzes now include tools that allow students to:

  1. Bookmark questions to revisit before submitting
  2. Strike through answer choices they want to eliminate

These features support student test-taking strategies and are available during quiz attempts. The markings are not submitted, visible to instructors, or retained after the attempt ends. The strike-through tool is available for True/False, Multiple Choice, and Multi-Select questions.

What Students See

The Bookmark tool is located on the right-hand side of the question title. When a question is bookmarked, it is displayed in the left-hand navigation panel for easy access.

The Strikethrough tool is displayed when the user hovers over an answer, allowing them to mark the answer as crossed out.

  • Marks a question for review
  • Displays an indicator in the question navigation panel

Strikethrough icon

  • Crosses out answer choices students wish to eliminate
  • Helps students narrow answer options

Instructor Considerations

These tools:

  • Do not affect grading
  • Are not visible to instructors
  • Are not stored with quiz submissions
  • Can help students organize their thinking during an assessment

You may wish to leave these tools enabled as a student support feature.

Disable the Tools for a Quiz To turn off Question Annotation Tools (Only For Instructors)

  • Open the quiz.
  • Select Edit.
  • Go to timing and display (right hand side of the screen).
  • Select Hide question annotation tools.
  • Save and Close.

Recommended Practice: Leave Question Annotation Tools enabled unless there is a specific pedagogical reason to disable them. These tools provide students with additional strategies for navigating assessments without affecting quiz results.
