This job aid provides step-by-step instructions for creating and configuring a grade item in Brightspace and entering grades for students. It also explains how to add feedback and save grade information.
Creating a Grade Item
Step 1 : Navigate to Grades
Go to your Brightspace course. From the navigation bar, click Course Menu. A dropdown menu will appear; click Grades to open the Grades page.
Step 2 : Create a New Grade Item
On the Grades page, navigate to the Grades navigation bar and click Manage Grades.
Click New, then select Item from the dropdown menu.
Step 3 : Select the Grade Item Type
After clicking Item from the dropdown menu, the New Item screen will appear. Here, you can choose the type of grade item you want to create:
Numeric grades are point-based
Selectbox allows you to grade based on level of achievement
Pass/Fail uses a simple pass/fail grade schemes
Formula allows you to grade based on an Excel-like formula
Calculated grades sum achievements across multiple grade items
Text allows you to enter text-only comments
Configure a Grade Item
After selecting a grade item type, the New Item page will appear. You will see three main categories in the New Item Nav Bar:
- Properties
- Restriction
- Objective
Before configuring anything else, name the grade item to avoid warnings or errors.
You can then configure the remaining options according to your requirements.
Save and Exit to save the grade item , your new item will show up in the grade item list.
Entering Grades
Step 1 : Select the Grade Item
Navigate to the Grades page again by going to Course Menu → Grades.
Select Manage Grades. You will see a list of all the grade items in the course.
Click the drop-down icon to the right of the grade item you want to grade, and select Enter Grades from the dropdown menu.
Step 2 : Enter the Grade
Click inside the grade box corresponding to the student and enter the grade.
When multiple students are enrolled, you can press Enter to move to the next student and enter grades consecutively.
You can also leave feedback for a student. Click the Pen icon to open the Feedback dialog box.
In the Grade Feedback window, enter your comments. You can also add Private Comments for other graders.
Save and Exit when finished.
